Frequently asked questions

What services does Sublime Garden Design provide?

We provide a range of services including: Garden design and Landscape Architecture, landscape project management, and container gardens.

What areas do you work in?

We do the majority of our work in Snohomish and King Counties and surrounding areas. Meetings to review your design concepts and final design are held at our studio in Snohomish.

What type of work do you do?

We are a landscape design firm and therefore our focus is on design and maximizing the opportunities of each site. We specialize in sustainable and ecologically responsible residential landscape design. We enjoy working with homeowners and contractors throughout the process from design to installation to create beautiful and sustainable spaces that feel like an extension of your home. We can work with you to design and renovate an existing landscape or to create one from a blank slate.

What type of work do you not do?

Although we are licensed contractors, we do not provide bids or quotes for elements that you want installed in your landscape that we did not design. If you do not think you need a design and are only looking to obtain a price for a new lawn, retaining wall, drainage system, or fence you would be better off to contact a landscape contractor directly.

What is the difference between a designer and landscape architect?

As a broad generalization, Landscape Architects tend to have more expertise, understanding and training, in hardscapes and complex grading and drainage situations and tend to focus more on large commercial and municipal projects. Landscape Designers typically work on residential landscape projects. Click here for a deeper look at the differences.

Do you do free consultations?

We do not offer free consultations. Due to our workload we are only able to schedule a limited amount of consultations, so these appointments are scheduled only after we have spoken on the phone and determined that we would be a good fit for your project. Our consultations are $250 and usually last 1-1 1/2 hours. Our time on the phone is the best opportunity to ask us questions to determine if we are the right fit for you. This website has many examples of our work and outlines our design process. You can also see what we’re up to by checking us out on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, and Houzz.

Do I need a landscape design?

A good landscape design can transform a yard you dread into a space you love by increasing the ‘useable living area’ of your property. If you have great beds and hardscape but need to refresh the plant pallet, a planting plan design may be all you need. If you need to renovate and refresh your yard a professional landscape design will assure your investment is well thought out and best suited to you and your family. Click here for more information on why a design might be right for you. Or tell us about your project and we can help you decide if a landscape design is right for you.

How much does a design cost?

Landscaping can be a considerable investment and one that can and should add value to your home. Because every project is so unique, it’s difficult to give an average cost for a landscape design. Designs for small yards can take as much time and effort as designs for larger yards because of the need to maximize every inch of the space. Our designs typically start at around $3000 and increase based on the scope of the project and amenities desired. For more detailed information read our blog on the cost of a landscape design.

How long does the design take?

The design process (which includes an initial consultation, a concept plan meeting, and the final design presentation) can be completed in 6-8 weeks depending on the season and the complexity of the design. In the spring and summer you may find times increase as we get busier. For more detailed information on the landscape design process click here.

What if I don’t like the design?

We spend a considerable amount of time getting to know you, leaning about your goals and desires (we ask a lot of questions!) and include you as an integral part of the landscape design process. We want the final landscape design to be unique to you and your space, unlike any other garden. Our detailed landscape questionnaire is the first step to getting to know you and acts as a guide for us to make sure you not only like, but actually love, your new garden.

I have never worked with a landscape designer before. What should I look for in a designer?

Choosing a landscape designer or Landscape Architect can be a difficult decision. Our best bit of advice is to choose a person or company that you feel you can identify with in terms of their style, process, and personality. Then talk to that person and make sure that he/she listens to you and understands your needs. A good design should be a merging of your landscape designer’s expertise and eye, and your needs, wants, and resources. Your landscape is an extension of your home and a reflection of your personal style, and you should enjoy it to the fullest.

Should I design all of my yard now or in pieces?

A landscape design is a wise investment, but it can be costly to complete the whole design at once. Creating the entire design at once is the wisest choice to assure a cohesive design and vision for the project as it progresses. This landscape master plan can then be sectioned out into phases that can be installed in smaller portions as budget allows. The installation of the entire master plan may take 1 year, 5 years, or more depending on how long your wish list is.

What size projects do you do?

Sublime Garden Design works on projects that range from small city lots to several acre sites. We do our best work when we can design an entire space holistically, taking into account all of the opportunities and constraints of the site. We integrate the opportunities of your site with your personal style, lifestyle and budget and come up with creative solutions to maximize the beauty and functionality of your space. We may not be the best fit for you if you are looking only to design a very small portion of your yard, or have a very limited budget. Check out our portfolio for examples of some of our past work.

Can you work with what I already have?

Whether you want to keep your favorite hydrangea in your new design or reuse all those Rhododendrons, we can work with you to create a design that best suits your needs. When possible, we can reuse existing plant material in the new design. Just tell us what you love (and don’t love) about your landscape, and we’ll work with you to decide the best way to reach your goals.

Can you design something that I can install myself? Or parts of it myself?

We go to great measures to design a landscaping plan that fits your needs. You can choose to install all or part of your landscaping plan yourself. Once we hand you the final design, you may do whatever you want with it. Landscaping can be backbreaking work best left to the professionals, but it can also be incredibley gratifying to complete small projects by yourself. We are here to help guide you to find the best solution for you. We can advise what types of projects are best to hire a contractor for and what types of projects you may be able to tackle yourself. Either way, we can help you create a master plan to guide you or a contractor in the installation.

How much does a landscape installation cost?

The cost to install your landscape design will vary greatly depending on many factors including the size of your project and the materials you select. The projects that we design typically range between $30,000 and $100,000, though we do projects both smaller and larger. We can work with you divide your project into phases and obtain bids for your project allowing you to compare costs, contractors, and material options.

How do I take care of the newly installed landscape?

A newly installed landscape will require regular watering while it establishes over the first 2-3 years. Even after that you may need to occasionally supplement water during our driest periods in July and August. You can keep up on timing of other garden tasks like pruning and mulching by following our blog.

If we hire you how soon can you start our project?

If after our first consultation you are ready to move forward, in most cases (pending an act of Mother Nature or torrential Seattle downpour) we will stay and begin taking measurements and doing a site analysis of your property. We get started on the design work right away and typically have concepts ready to review within 3-4 weeks.

Can we meet with you on an evening or weekend?

We understand that with work and busy schedules it may be difficult to meet during normal business hours. However, because of our demanding schedules and the time and energy we put into our work, we feel that it is equally important to spend time with our family and friends and recharge our creative juices. For this reason, we do not work on the weekends or evenings. Held at our studio in Snohomish, our latest appointment is typically 4:30 pm, however we have on occasion made exceptions to make later meetings work.
