A deck as an outdoor room

March 18, 2016

Have a deck project on your mind… So do we!

Let me walk you through the installation of a deck we recently completed. This is not your average deck. This deck is truly more of an addition to their home than ’just a deck’. The only thing missing is a bedroom.

The client had an existing deck that they did not like and had become a maintenance headache.

Many elements of the existing deck they liked and wanted to incorporate the idea of into the new design. The privacy screen between them and their neighbor was a must. Having an overhead element incorporated was also important but the new overhead needed to shelter them from the rain.

The main goals:

  1. Dining space- with shelter from the rain
  2. Cooking area
  3. Privacy from neighbor
  4. Warmth
  5. Area to dance!
  6. Lighting

The details:

The new privacy screen has Parasoleil panels incorporated as an art element and the horizontal cedar creates a sleeker more modern feel than the old lattice.

The overhead is constructed of aluminum to eliminate the need to stain every year and the roof is polycarbonate sheltering them from the rain while still allowing light to come through.

The railing is a custom built aluminum railing creating a cohesive feel with the overhead and using larger size materials than standard metal railings allows for a more comfortable surface to lean on. The incorporation of lighting illuminates the space in the evening. Built-in planters bring opportunity for seasonal color and lush plantings.

The fireplace creates a focal point and provides warmth to enjoy the deck later into the evening on cool nights.

Providing a jog in the deck to incorporate the grill and a built-in counter with storage maximizes the space undercover for dining.

The surface and fascia are a composite made by Azek which offers a unique color with much less maintenance than wood. The color ties in seamlessly with the color selected for the powdercoating of the metal structures.
