What patio material is right for your space?

July 26, 2014

The hardscape of the garden creates the structure and backbone of the space and is critical in the overall composition. The hardscape is typically the first element to any space that needs to be designed and installed.

Plants are fun, but really should be the last step (the icing on the cake).

Hardscape is a term that refers to basically all visible elements of the garden except the plants. The patios, walls, steps, walkways, etc.

There are many different options for hardscape materials. If we narrow in on a patio space the things to consider when deciding on materials are (in no particular order):

  1. The overall shape
  2. The color options
  3. Manmade vs. natural materials
  4. Maintenance
  5. And of course cost comes into play as well

All of these points have an effect on the others and can act like dominoes. Once one decision is made it often narrows down the options for the remainder of the choices.

The hardscape sets the scene for the feeling of a space and the plantings play off of that to complete the scene.

Some options include:

Natural stone:

Natural stone can range in color and can be random (flagstone) or dimentional cut (squares and rectangles).

Pavers:

Pavers come in a variety of sizes and shapes depending on the manufacturer creating spaces with an old world cobble feel to something very clean and modern.

Concrete:

Concrete is naturally grey but can be finished with a variety of colors, textures, and or stamped patterns.

What do you think would be the best material for your dream patio? What about also incorporating a fire pit, water feature, or covered structure into your garden.
