Woodland Garden

November 2, 2018

We just completed a woodland garden in Granite Falls. It all started with a trip to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show where the clients purchased a soft tub spa and found a greenhouse they fell in love with. Our first trip out to the site was in the snow but we were still able to visualize with the client their desire to create a welcoming woodland garden that could provide opens spaces to enjoy the beautiful surroundings while adding a vegetable garden protected from the deer.

Accessibility was a great consideration as the clients are retired and plan on this being their permanent home. There were some challenging slopes, drainage, and an awkward back patio that needed to be addressed while accommodating entertaining space, a garden, spa, and an area for a portable fire pit.

The new front porch is the perfect spot to enjoy a warm cup of coffee in the morning while watching the sun rise through the trees. The porch also provides a peek through the trees to the entry of the driveway to see who might be coming to visit.

The back deck provides ample room for entertaining while accounting for future plans for new french doors from the great room and a potential sun room addition. It overlooks the spa patio across the lawn to the dry stream that directs runoff from the hill into a rain garden.

While prepping the patio we found that a portion of the hill we planned to tuck the seat wall into was solid rock. The contractor was able to cut into the rock enough that not only were we able to keep the seat wall where we wanted it but accommodate a drain behind the wall to ensure the drainage from the drysteam did not get trapped.

The greenhouse was incorporated with some galvanized toughs to plant vegetables. There are many very bold deer in their neighborhood so a fence to protect the garden was a must. I don’t think the deer will be able to get into this garden…. And if they do they deserve a snack.

We look forward to checking in on this garden as it matures and to hear how the clients are enjoying their woodland retreat.
