Plant of the Month: Winter Sun Hybrid Mahonia

January 15, 2019

To kick the year off with a bright spark is the Winter Sun Hybrid Mahonia (Mahonia x media ‘Winter Sun’). This architectural evergreen has fragrant, bright yellow blooms in December/January. The glossy evergreen frond-like foliage grows in upright whorls along its branches which make it a great choice for a focal plant for all seasons. Hummingbirds like this Mahonia since it produces so many flowers during a season that can be pretty scarce food wise for them. Other types of birds enjoy its grape-like berries that form from the flowers in later summer/fall. The Winter Sun Hybrid Mahonia is a tough plant as well. It can withstand periods of drought once it’s established and isn’t too picky when it comes to soil types, although it will do best in well-drained soils. You can prune the plant when it is young to keep it nice and full but as it matures, you won’t have to do much maintenance on this plant other than removing dead or broken branches. It can reach up to 7 feet tall and 4-5 wide.
