New Plants for 2015!

February 6, 2015

As busy as we are, it’s always important to make time for fun and educational field trips! We attended the T&L Nursery open house on a beautiful foggy, yet sunny Friday. T&L is one of our favorite nurseries to get perennials and grasses from because they use responsible growing practices and produce gorgeous, healthy plants.

Andrej Suske introduced us to some of their new plants to use in the upcoming year. There were a few beautiful varieties of astilbes, coleus and brugmansia, but our favorite was Mahonia ‘Soft Caress.’ This unique plant has stalks of yellow flowers in early winter and bamboo-like foliage year round. Mahonia gives the garden some great contrasting textures when it is planted next to hostas, heuchera, or any other broad-leafed perennial. Watch carefully and you might see it pop up in some of our upcoming designs!

How many of you have Nandina in your garden? We love using Nandina ‘Gulf Stream’ in many of our designs since it’s hardy, evergreen, and has beautiful green foliage with soft red-orange new growth. T&L introduced us to a new variety of Nandina called ‘Obsession.’ This variety is similar to our beloved ‘Gulf Stream,’ but it maintains its upright shape better and has more intense coloring that lasts longer through the year. Any plant that brightens up the garden during the dreary winter months is a winner for us!

  1. I love the soft color of the Mahonia. I think it brings a really peaceful feeling into a garden. Recently we have been making changes to our garden. This would make a good addition. Thanks for sharing.
