Sublime Garden Design opens a studio!
Hello 2014.
As I sit down to write this (in our new studio!) so many things are flowing through my mind I’m not really sure where to start. I feel like the best place to start is to acknowledge how grateful I am for being where I am today. I started this business in 2005…a long story which I won’t go into now but if you are interested you can read more about that here. At the time it was a scary decision filled with doubt and uncertainty, and yet I somehow knew it was the right thing to do.
As I sit here today I have many of the same feelings I did back then…feelings that many of us deal with at some point both in our personal and professional lives. They range from sheer excitement, to fear, to anxiety, to eager anticipation and glee.
Something I once read said that instead of always looking toward the summit when climbing a huge mountain we must make time to turn and look back down the mountain to really appreciate how far we have come. That’s where it feels like I am right now. Climbing a huge mountain. Understanding that we are embarking on a new journey, and reflecting on the people and events that we have experienced along the way (perspective is everything!).
Opening a design studio has been something that I have been considering for several years. I have looked at numerous spaces but for one reason or another the space or the timing just wasn’t right. So what makes it right, now? The answer is a really more of a feeling that came from deep in my gut, along with some other synchronistic events, (including finding our new Operations Coordinator, Jen) that helped guide me.
You may be asking (as I did many times), in the age of telecommuting and Dropbox, why does someone take on the overhead of rent and another employee?
There is no doubt, having a home office is great. A 30 second commute down the stairs is a hard one to beat. The flexibility of working out of a home office has served me well for many years and definitely has it perks– being able to be home for my kids when they were young, popping into the kitchen for a quick snack at any time, wandering around the garden to get inspiration, or throwing in a load of laundry in mid-day are just a few of them.
But I have had this deep desire to build something bigger than just me. Not just for the sake of growing a business, but because I want to do it with others that share a similar passion for what they do. The growth of Sublime Garden Design, including hiring Jen, has really came down to a desire for collaboration and to give the best service we can to our clients.
The studio also came about as a way to have some separation from work and home life. As someone who loves what I do, I can easily become consumed by my work and pay less attention to taking care of myself and my family. I am hoping that having a work space will allow me and my team to leave work at work, and be fully present with our families when we are at home. In a nutshell, working together as a team in our studio will allow us to offer a better service to our clients and create a better work experience for our team. A win-win!
If you are reading this you may be someone we have encountered on the journey. If you are a friend or family, I thank you for your love and support. No one that encounters success does it alone.
If you are one of the many clients we have been fortunate enough to work with over the years I want to thank you for your trust in us and for being a part of that journey. We have learned so much from each and every one of you. Most of those experiences have been wonderful– some have been painful– but we have (I like to think) become better professionals, and wiser human beings, having learned these lessons.
Last but not least, our success has been a team effort, and I alone could not have achieved what we as a team have together. To Kryssie, Jen, Devin and Courtney…thank you for all you do!
I am really excited for what is in store for 2014! I hope you will stop by the studio, either for the open house on January 17th, or just to pop in and say hello if you are in the neighborhood.
Happy 2014 to you and may this year bless you with peace and joy, and possibly a new water feature 😉
