Endings and New Beginnings

March 22, 2016

Welcome Spring.

It happens every year, but that doesn’t seem to lessen the excitement it brings me to see the daffodils, tulips, and magnolias bursting with color against gray skies. The unfurling of a fern frond and the opening of a leaf have a way of making even a rainy day seem bright. I am a spring baby so maybe that’s why I love this time of year so much. This year spring is bittersweet however, not only marked by a time of new beginnings, but also of an ending.

It was my mom’s favorite time of year too. Was… Was, because this year I joined a club that I never wanted to belong to. One that many of you likely belong to as well. If you are a member of this club, you know that until you experience the loss of a parent you can never truly understand what it feels like to have to live life without her. My mom passed away in January after a short illness this past fall. This is a very personal subject for me but I share this with you not to dwell in the sadness but to honor her. You see, if you are reading this now, are a past or future client, follow us on social media, or are a friend, you have been touched by her too.

If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing now. She was my inspiration. She was also a horticulturalist, a brilliant plant mixologist, and an avid gardener. Her garden was the envy of many and was on the Snohomish Garden Tour several times, as well as being photographed for national publications. While we took different career paths, she always encouraged me and never let me give up when things seemed impossible.

A client recently summed it up when she said to me that she was grateful for my mom and that she felt my mom in her garden, brought there through me. Of course we were both in tears after that. That was a moment I will never forget and I realized at that time that she has touched more people than she ever knew, through me. She is and will always be deeply missed but she is still here…in our gardens and in our hearts.
